Gao, W., Wu, Y., and Liu, H., "Comparative Observation of Curative Effects of Reflexotherapy and Conventional Therapy in Treating Reflux Esophagitis." 1998 China Reflexology Symposium Report, Beijing " China Reflexology Association, pages 19-20.

Synopsis:

141 cases with reflux esophagitis were divided into two groups: Group A, consisted of 63 cases, both male and female, and were given one treatment of foot reflexology daily for 10 days. Group B, consisting of 78 cases, both male and female, and were given conventional drugs and dietary and lifestyle changes. The authors felt that the stimulation from foot reflexology on the lower esophageal sphincter muscles (LES) that was regulated by the vagus nerve and hormones could help improve the reflux esophagitis. In Group A, 47 of the 63 cases were completely cured, 13 were relieved and 3 had no results. In Group B, 42 of the 78 cases were completely healed, 24 were relieved, and 13 no results. It was determined that Group A had a better rate than Group B.

Conclusion:

Foot reflexology was found to be effective for the relief of reflux esophagitis.
